Dano Questions about Hornwort

I hope someone knows. I bet Dano does...Can use use a regular light bulb on my extra hornwort to keep it alive? I threw it in a sanitized 2.5g after I dipped it in PP and rinsed. I'm seeding the sponge filter for it and have been using a 40 watt home bulb on it for a few days. Do I have to have special lighting on it?

It would be more useful to use a reg light. The only other type I can get I think that I have found so far is a clip on tank light. It's a 13 watt compact fluorescent: 13 watt compact fluorescent. I Dont want a clip light, it will take a week to get and it's expensive.

found this info for you and it is as I remembered... you don't need to buy the clip on light.

Easy to Grow. New aquarists find this the perfect plant. Under nearly any type of lights, hornwort survives and grows. Under bright lights, it grows as much as an inch per day. It sucks out fish wastes faster than fish can excrete them. Carbon dioxide, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and phosphates all go into that fast-growing foliage. It sucks all the nutrition out of the water in six to eight weeks and will often die unless you fertilize it. But in the meantime, hornwort keeps new tanks healthy as a horse without West Nile Fever. Under bright lights, hornwort growing tips often turn reddish.

Wow! I have read a lot on hornwort but was confused!!!! TYVM! So you think 40 watts normal bulb is ok then? Same ferts you suggested before for a tank with no substrate? Or do you think the snail and shrimp poop will do...lol :D.

I think the 40 watt will do especially since two watt per gallon will grow many specie of plant. I would add the fertilizer as well, but be ready to trim the hornwort back often as it grows fast.

I hate Hornwort! I wouldn't recommend it for indoor aquarium usage. I made the mistake of having a lot of it. Some of it is seasonal and will wilt and die back and the mess it makes is unbelievable. Light and fertilizers are good for it..................Good luck

Lol, now you say....It was recommeded to me here and on another site to help get rid of the BBA. I had read it drops leaves and is very hard to clean up. I have nerites and shrimp to help with that....I know dream on. It's a low light plant. I like it so far. Someday I will graduate up hopefully.

My danios have already started munching on some. They play with it to. They swim around with a leaf in their mouth spitting it out and catching it. I'll see how long that lasts.

Thank you for the advice guys :).

I bought a bunch of it and added it to my tank... I've already divided it thrice... the guy is write about the ferts... I have it in a regular tank at work and it requires the ferts to stay alive... the fish love it though... and it grows like wild... it grows under any type of light bulb

Re: Dano Questions about Hornwort

Glad to hear it grows like wild GS. I hope it will be ok until I get the ferts. So far I see parts turning red in both tanks which should be a good sign of growth. The hornwort is not as bright green in the smaller tank but might get better.

Update:

To funny....I was shipped Anacharis not Hornwort like I ordered. I like it!! The headline is now wrong. The Anacharis is growing well under normal lighting and minimal ferts. :)

Re: Dano Questions about Hornwort

:D I wouldn't advertise that I received Anacharis from across state lines. It is illegal to ship or sell the stuff in many states. There is now a long list of forbidden plants! I get the stuff from local waters and I hope it isn't illegal. I cannot sell or trade many of my plant clippings to LFSs because of the laws and I wind up throwing beautiful plants in the garbage.
