Re: New fry! (and how to change water?)

Well it's been about 2 months now and I definitely have one boy and three girls. This is a recipe for disaster if I ever saw one :o I don't want to be inundated with inbred fry so I will probably...

Re: Platy weak and not eating

I tried a couple of peas yesterday (the other fish devoured the first one) but she didn't even attempt to eat it. This morning she was dead on the bottom with her belly a bit swollen (it wasn't like...

Platy weak and not eating

My red wagtail platy has been acting unwell for about a week now. She initially would swim out from hiding and eat a little, then she started spitting out the food, now she mostly ignores it,...

Easy Cycle

I just wanted to share how much easier it was to cycle my second tank with seeded items from the first, and lots of good advice from these forums.

I set up a 14-gal tank about a month ago and I let...

Re: Is this platy a boy or a girl?

To be honest I wouldn't mind a few more surviving fry, and if they do have more I will probably do the same thing I did for the mollies, but I would be happier keeping things as is. If several...

Re: Is this platy a boy or a girl?

I found estimates that were all over the place... One article said they can drop 3-4 batches of fry from one mating. One mentioned one fish that was observed to have 11 batches. This article says...

Re: Is this platy a boy or a girl?

I have read this also about livebearers storing sperm, and I'm sure they were both fertilized at the LFS (the tanks there were very crowded). However, I have also read that after about 6 months...

Re: Is this platy a boy or a girl?

Thanks Dano - she just doesn't have the typical rounded fin I guess. Maybe it was clamped from stress when I first brought her home?

I think the gold one came pre-fertilized from the LFS already....

Is this platy a boy or a girl?

I know this is a stupid question but let me explain my confusion...

When I first set up the tank just over 3 months ago I brought home the red wagtail platy and three mollies. I looked up how to...

Re: New fry! (and how to change water?)

Fry Update and Questions:

So far I still have 4 babies, now 3 weeks old and growing fast. I put up a photo in the Small Tanks forum. They are very cute and I could watch them for hours. I was...

Re: Small Tanks (20 gallons and smaller)

I have been infected with MTS so here they are:

16-gal bowfront - there are 3 fry visible here with my two platies. (Number 4 is hiding...) This is after I made an attempt to clean the algae...

Re: Fighting Mollies and Stress

Thanks for the links Pwat, your molly story was definitely educational. I don't want to put any other fish with the male right now - I'm watching the cycling process which will be stressful enough. ...

Re: Fighting Mollies and Stress

Just an update:

The silver molly never recovered from the stress of giving birth and being bullied - she died a week later. Then my platies started looking stressed so that was the last straw - I...

Re: New fry! (and how to change water?)

Thank you! I did the pwc just as you said and I didn't suction up any fry. I put a piece of pantyhose over the end of the siphon with a rubber band, which seemed to work fine. :)

New fry! (and how to change water?)

When I got home yesterday with the floating plants there were fry! I don't know how many but my guess would be around 6 survivors at that point. this morning I still see 3 or 4. Mama fish is still...

Re: Fighting Mollies and Stress

Thanks for the suggestion - the cave is a good idea. So far no fry though - my girl is still boxy and has a big dark gravid spot, very obvious.

I have been observing the tank for several days now,...

Re: Fighting Mollies and Stress

I don't have a second tank yet (although I did bring my old 20-gal tank stand home from a friend's house - she had borrowed it to use as a stereo stand...). I agree that a second female would...

Re: 16 gallon, don't want to overstock

OK so by my calculations the mollies are about 2.5" each for 5", and the platies are around 2" each which is 4". That gives me 9-10" of fish right now. One more molly would put me around 12-13". ...

16 gallon, don't want to overstock

Currently I have 2 mollies and 2 platies in a 16 gallon bow-front tank. I wanted to add 1 or 2 more female mollies to keep the male occupied, which I don't think would be too much. However, I was...

Re: Fighting Mollies and Stress

Update - it seems like the male molly has calmed down. I watched the tank from a distance for a long time yesterday and he didn't pay much attention to the female, instead spending his time eating...

Re: Fighting Mollies and Stress

Unfortunately he was too weak when I got home. He was barely moving in the main tank. I put him in the bucket and noticed that his belly was swollen and the scales were sticking out like a pine...

Re: Fighting Mollies and Stress

OK I hope he's not too weak when I get home today. I will put him in the bucket for some time alone and hope for the best. I hope I stop losing fish sometime soon. :(

Fighting Mollies and Stress

Hello,

I feel like I am always having new problems here...

Since I set up my tank 2 months ago the dalmatian molly has chased the black molly (both males), especially at feeding time. I figured...

Re: Are lyretail mollies more fragile?

I think I will stop by the farm sometime - the website says they sell to the public. And it definitely looks interesting.
