Ottos are the best algae eaters and they mix well with Discus. But sometimes they are hard to maintain. I beleive shrimps might get eaten, specially if there are other fish on the tank like Rainbows...

Sorry but, were you feeding them flakes? For real? Discus are carnivorous fish and required high protein food. Also they prefer eating from the bottom, so sinking food is preferred on this species....

Is the tasting method accurate? :D :D Just soak it for 2 weeks and change water daily. After that check the salinity of the water. Wish you luck.
