Re: Recommendations on proper keeping of Betta fish.

Picking the actual fish is the hard part. We looked for one that was responsive; with good finnage, then we went for color.

Males are fancier, but I think both have a similar range of personality.

Re: Recommendations on proper keeping of Betta fish.

Ideally, IMO, 5 gallons is perfect. Heated (80 degrees F), and filtered.

They're fine alone; they don't need tankmates. An interesting enviornment keeps them from being bored. Live plants or silk...

We just got 4 ghost shrimp for our 12 gallon; they're fun to watch!

Re: Fish for 12 gallon eclipse

Yup, I did, and did (went to the site and emailed them). ACF's are on the list requiring permits; ADFs are not on any of the lists (which of course means they're not explcitly excluded, thus the...

Re: Fish for 12 gallon eclipse

Well, we had decided on an ADF for the tank. Our local shop where we had gotten the betta didn't have any; said they were out of season but should be in soon.

I swore that I had seen some at the...

Re: High PH with soft water

That isn't that high; mine's just about that. Most tropical fish will do fine at that ph; obviously there are always exceptions.

What size tank do you have?

Welcome aboard!

Re: New betta!

The new one. I hadn't known about blackwater extract before.

The first one was active, but had a very different personality. This one is very aggressive. It might just be a difference between fish.

Pretty much. It's a natural way to adjust the water paramaters a little...

edit: Ha. I've just learned that activated carbon (unless used up obviously) will remove the blackwater extract from the...

Re: They're staring at me....

Who knows, maybe there was something there :)

Maybe they were just wondering what those two funny looking creatures were that were staring at them.....

Re: New betta!

It makes the water conditions more like the betta's natural enviornment. It slighty tints the water. One teaspoon per 5 gallons, every water change.

Basically it has similar affect as Indian Almond...

Re: They're staring at me....

Mine only do that at night, when I turn out the light. They all go to the surface.

Fish are always hungry. I think their instinct tells them if there's food, eat it all up because you never know...

Re: New betta!

thanks. Had I mastered the art of fish photography I would've had a great shot of him flaring at the camera. As it is it looks like a dark blob :)

Our other betta never built a bubble nest; and in...

They're staring at me....

This happened a few weeks ago; but haven't gotten around to posting it. It's been quiet, so maybe this'll spark some conversation :)

My wife and I were observing our 12 gallon tank, and all seven...

Re: Fish for 12 gallon eclipse

Well there's a long list of what not to put in a 12 gallon :)

I've done a lot of reading on ADF's the last few days; they seem pretty cool. Not the speediest to food so the chief concern with being...

Re: Doctors Foster and Smith

We've done business with them in the past and have had good experiences. Mostly with dog items. Our dog loves it as well as they always send a biscuit along with the items ordered....

Fish for 12 gallon eclipse

Well, our Loachie (hillstream loach) has gone to fish heaven. He'd been having 'suction' and body control issues for a few days; he still ate though. But he passed yesterday.

The tank has seven...

Re: New betta!

Well betta # 2 is doing quite well! He's an aggressive sucker. He flares at his food pellets before he gobbles them. Every single one!

Re: Heaters for betta fish?

Agree with both replies. 80 is a sweet spot for bettas. A fluctuating temperature invites disease....you can buy small heaters for that tank that will keep the temp constant...

Re: Betta Petition

I always thought it odd how they're kept. Although, I don't suppose it's much different than dogs and cats at pet stores kept in cages. Thing is you don't see them promoting permanent living quarters...

Re: Betta and apple snail?

I'm going to wait until snail space opens up in my 12 gallon. Currently I've two big ramshorns (about nickel sized shells) in there and it's otherwise fully stocked.

The 5g will stay betta only.

Re: Betta and apple snail?

I think we made a good choice. This betta is much more aggressive than the last one. When I look at the tank, and he's on the other side, he zooms up to me and flares! He even chomps at the food...
