Re: automatic feeders
I wouldn't recommend them. They are more trouble than they are worth. Fish can go a week without being fed, so missing a day won't hurt, actually it could be helpful. I have heard stories of the...

Re: Feeding Cucumber
Fruit is fine as well. I feed my Ryukin and Pearlscale orange and strawberrie pieces. Just let them float and they will get them. Otoss also like celery. I use a clip for that.

Re: heater in tank
In my experience, it depends on the type of heater. I have had the cheap glass ones that sometimes got very hot, and did burn. I now have the Marineland Stealth and that one is great. Not hot to the...

Re: Question about fishless cycling
toomie,
I have cycled 3 tanks with just a piece of raw salmon that my wife had in the freezer. I just cut off a 1/2 inch piece and put it in the tank. It will break down and produce the ammonia you...

Hope you have the room, because the hi fins can get up to 39 inches long. They also lose their stripe as they get older and aren't as nice looking as the fish you bought when it was little....

Re: Driftwood
I got a piece of Eucalyptus driftwood, and it has been soaking for 3 days now, and there is little discoloration in the water. I think darker the wood, the more tannins that could possible be...

Re: bumble bee snails!!!
They are a salt water snail I believe, so they wouldn't work for you.
Some snails, like the pond snail, is hermaphroditic and doesn't need a partner to reproduce, and it will lay eggs and infest an...

Re: tank for sis betta!!!
The size of the tank is fine for the Betta. You can take gravel from your already cycled tank and it will help it along. You can also use your platys, but it will stress them. Go here and read about...

Re: Driftwood
As I do more research Dano, I am thinking you are right. They are caught wild as well like Oto's so they use the same technique using cyanide to slow them down.

I know I need 0 nitrites, but for some reason, after 6 months, this tank bounces between 0 and 1. I do 25% water changes every other day, and it still sometimes reads 1 on the liquid test. Water out...

I have a question on driftwood. Is there a better type to get? I have been on aquabid and I see that there is Mopani, Eucalyptus, Malaysian etc. The reason I am getting a piece, is because I...

It should be fine. They do like a little water flow, so it shouldn't bother him. Good size tank too, he will appreciate it.

Re: Recommendations on proper keeping of Betta fish.
Should at least be between 2-4 gallon. Depending what you want to spend, you can find something inexpensive at Wal-Mart, most come with some form of filtration that needs an air pump which is fine....

A suggestion would be putting them in a platic tub for the time being. One of the kind of tubs that you pack christmas ornaments or what not in. They are inexpensive, and you may have one at home...

Re: A few questions
You can't add anything with the goldfish, because you have too many in the tank now. Comets should be 1 per 20 gallons. They will be fine in the pond with the Koi, as long as they aren't too...

Yes, just put it in the tank and the good bacteria will feed off of it.
No, it didn't smell. Like I said, I used a small piece. I did it in a 5 gallon tank and used a 1/2 square inch piece.

Do a fishless cycle. I used an inch piece of frozen salmon my wife had for the cycle in one of my tanks, and it worked great. It will take about 4 weeks to cycle. Make sure you get a master test kit...

Re: new filter playing up?
It is probably the bogwood leaching tannins into the water and this is causing it to turn yellow. You can use carbon and you can also boil the wood for a few hours in a pan of water, keep topping the...
