Thanks Gymno, the point is that the reading has stayed constant at 5ppm for 12 days now with nitrites and nitrates showning no rise at all - nothing seems to be working as it should.:confused:

Dan, no not changing water. All I have done is added another filter, some inactive substrate, raised temperature and today added some calcareous rock as the GH is down to 1-2, bit soft.

Had a thought last night. The poxy little foam filter I am using (actually may be fine) has to be weighted down to keep it on bottom of the tank. I am using strips of lead that are for weighting...

Yea - got the idea. Whatever, it's all very interesting and part of learning. Turned temp up, had a quiet word with the tank and the gouramis. Now off to bed. :D Got boat trip early in the morning...

Dave, lost 9 tetras in 3 days 3weeks ago - had them for a year - horrid. All other fish seem ok but darent use filtermedia/water from that tank as may be infected with something:(
