that sounds wierd
if your keeping up with w/c and still very high nitrates

see if your testing supplies are expired

if not bring your water to a lfs to double check

Erm, sorry, I'm a bit fuzzy on this one... for how long has your tank been set up, did it cycle? what kind of filter do you have, is it a new filter, new media? established? what size tank?

High nitrate is a symptom of accumulated decay. If the tank is reasonably cycled and maintained well the nitrate should slowly drop to a range below 40 and hopefully even lower. The bacteria that consumes nitrate is an anaerobic bacteria and must have places where there is little oxygen exposure such as the bottom of the substrate or sand. The reduction of nitrate is the slowest of the cycling stages. You need to find what you are doing to add to the decay in the tank and check to see if you have at least two inches of medium gravel and or sand. Filter with activated carbon. Use water that has a low nitrate level for changes. You can use 5% to 10% of RO water or distilled water mixed with your tap water to dilute the tank nitrate levels. Do not feed for a week. Do not use any kind of plant fertilizer. Research nitrate in the aquarium.
