Richard, the bacteria grows in the filter naturally to "feed" off the ammonia. Safestart just gives the bactria a boost in starting, if it does as it claims. I would have thought that 11days would have shown something, especially since you did see Nitrites earlier. I assume you've been adding Ammonia or has it just stayed at 5ppm? Test for Nitrates, just to be sure, but I doubt you'll see any...

Yea Sharon, I am not at all happy

Added ammonia 1st day to 5ppm and it hasnt budged since. I have and still am testing every day. I realise that the bacteria multiply in filter medium but if no additive used such as safestart, as I thought Dan was suggesting, then where do the bacteri come from??

I have added some brand new substrate today in the hope that it may help in some way. And put another filter (tiny tetra) in in case my existing foam filter is not passing water through the medium properly - it was a cheap plastic box thing with foam in it that I cut up to fit - but not a good fit!

The loss of my tetras was just so sudden and sad

Maybe the poorly fitting media is the problem, and it could be slowing everything down. I think I'd raise the temp a couple of degrees as well...

So sorry you lost the tetras...any idea what happened/

no idea - it was suggested that it could have been tetras disease but there were no signs till a couple lost their tail fins then over 2 days rest died. Water quality was fine, no changes except introducing 3 pearl gourami. No signs or evidence of any tail nipping. All the rest in the tank are fine and have been for 3 weeks but doing more frequent water changes in case.

That's odd...it doesn't sound like Tetra disease...Hope the cycle speeds up for you, soon!

Nitrate is the end product of the cycling process. The aerobic bacteria types reduce the ammonia and nitrite to nitrate. Anaerobic bacteria then begin the process of reducing the nitrate. Nitrate reduction is a long process because there are few anaerobic bacteria in an active well oxygenated tank. This is where water changes become necessary not only to refresh and remove fish waste, but to dilute the nitrate....................If you don't get an increasing nitrate reading, you can assume that the beneficial anaerobic bacteria haven't grown strong enough to reduce the ammonia and nitrite............................I really don't think that the Startright or any of the other additives would contain a bacterium that would consume nitrate with out being in a low oxygen environment.

Your dead tetras had missing tails? What do you think would have caused that if not from nipping? Fin rot takes time and would have been noticeable.

Dan, I was suggesting a Nitrate testing in order to rule out that the tank has cycled...I seriously doubt it, though...

You are correct that a nitrate test is needed to see how things are progressing.

Oh well, I didn't really think you'd get any...I wonder why you saw Nitrites and then they disappeared? Guess you'll just have to wait...and test...and wait...and test,...well, you get the idea!!!
