Default making rock wall

I bought tank epoxy sticks and am building a rock wall. I'm about half done (Have to wait 30 minutes for the clay to harden between layers). The problem is that I'm using red lava rock and red slate, but the clay is gray. The wall itself looks great. . . little caves, outcroppings to break up the tank a bit. But the clay cement is going to be really obvious when done. Any ideas for coloring the clay? I don't think there's any paint I can use that won't be dangerous for the fish. . . or is there?

Thanks for any ideas!

Hi backpacker, welcome sounds like an interesting project, hope it works out.

Re: the paint - I have read somewhere that there is a "marine epoxy" paint that is used in marine tanks & once it is has fully cured (around 2 wks) should be safe. I am not sure where you buy it though, aquarium suppliers might know. I have heard that some people just use normal spray paint & then coat it with epoxy to make it safe - but I wouldn't like to take the risk! I think the test would be "if all the fish die, then it isn't safe". I really don't know how you would test it.

Good luck with it...hope to see pics. when it is finished.

Thanks Bernie. I came up with such an easy solution. . . I've read it before but it didn't hit me until I was on the 3rd level and the first 2 had dried. . . I'm just sticking small aquarium gravel in all the visible clay before it dries. And I'll be tying some plants to the wall as well, so I think all the white bits should be hidden in the end.

My grandpa, who passed away a few weeks ago, built a tank into a wall. He had some very nice rare tropical fish that he kept. I might have a few pictures of it. He pretty much destroyed a square or rectangle in the wall and then he put the tank in. I dont know why but it took him awhile to build it. It ended up very cool though.

Good luck with the clay and the wall!
