Unhappy Random death

So while i was feeding my fish i noticed that the cories were hiding. Trying to get them to eat their food, i lightly tapped on the glass for them to come out of the plants. I counted 4. I counted again, looked around, then even over-turned some gravel. I should have had 5. So i was looking straight from the water and found my oldest, largest cory on the top of the water dead.

So my question is...what caused him to die? I introduced the new cories about 2-3 weeks ago! Is it possible that it could be related? I don't think it could be anything else, as in there isn't anything stressful going on and he was very young (i bought him less than a year ago).

Check the water quality (ph, ammonia, ect). Have you noticed another fish harassing the catfish?.......It may be just a "random" death as you have said and may not be anything.....Unfortunately fish die sometimes for no apparent reason.

Another elder catfish died, or at least was found . I'm only down to 3 cats again which is not how my plan was intended to go about. Maybe the new catfish brought some internal disease that is perhaps a parasite and they are immune to it but the older catfish are not? Is that possible for fish? Kind of like the Spanish and the Natives?

I'm going to check the water readings tomorrow for the 10 gallon as well as for the 20 because some of my goldfish have been dying and it seems that they are the less hardy type (white, smaller). This is very strange and frustrating because i have no idea what i'm doing wrong!

Have you put in any kind of medication or salt in with the cats?.....Are you certain that a good quantity of food gets down to them......Cory cats and other bottom feeders have been known to starve because they don't get quite enough to eat.....Corys don't do too well in heat either.....

Dano i feed them everyday of the week except Thursdays so they can clean they're bodies (same with my betta). All of my fish are peaceful to each other and they all get a good amount of food. I actually think that it might be that i fed them too much because when i added the new cories i put in 5 regular sinking pellets. I thought it would be fair that all of them got a good amount. Before, i used to put in 2 or maybe 3 if they were all small. Maybe it could have been overfeeding is what i'm trying to say.

What does that do exactly? I've never heard of that. Sorry, I have to play newbie on that one.

It's like detox but for fish . I read it in a thread on the forums here once and it seems that it doesn't harm the fish so i do it weekly.

Dano, really? I thought overfeeding could kill a fish. Maybe i'm getting over-stocking and over-feeding mixed up.... Anyways here are the water readings:

10 gallon
pH: between 6.8-7.0
ammonia: 0 ppm
nitrite: 0 ppm
nitrate: a bit higher than 0 ppm but not 5.0

20 gallon
pH: 7.6
ammonia: 0 ppm
nitrite: .25 ppm
nitrate: 0 ppm

For the 20 gallon with the goldfish, i've been informed by my lifeguard of a brother that the pH is pretty horrible and i can only guess this is because of their "extracts." I'm not as worried about my goldfish right now since they are easily replaced (not that i dont have anything against them). But my cories are a different story.

I'm not so sure what could be wrong with my 10 gallon though .

Over feeding as in having uneaten food rotting on the bottom is bad.
