Talking Beginner, needs ideas

I'm just beginning in the fish hobbie, haven't even gotten my tank yet because I want to do plenty of research before I get started. My budget will only allow a ten gallon tank right now and I'm trying to decide on the fish I want to get so that I set the tank up right for them. I would like to have several different types of fish but not over crowd my tank, I've read the rules on that several times. I just can't seem to make up my mind. I don't really want to get fish that want to be in a school because that can mean about 6 of the same fish and I risk overcrowding if I add different fish to the mix. I thought about doing platies because of the color variations but don't want to have to deal with alot of babies. Also thought about cherry barbs. If I did do platies could I get them all the same sex and would they be happy that way or stressed. How many would I have to get for them to be happy fish and what other fish can I put with them. If I decide on cherry barbs, how many and what other fish can I add. I know not to add them all at the same time and I'm open to other fish sugggestions. Please help me make up my mind, there are just so many to choose from but I'm a beginner so I need to start with easy fish for a beginner and different sites say different things. Thanks in advance for any advise you may have.

I think all male Platies would be fine together, and would be OK with the Cherry Barbs. If you check to see what fish are available to you at your location, it would be easier to make suggestions. Are you going to cycle the tank, fishlessly, before you add any fish?

Kiki...I'll just throw out a few options to consider while the tank is cycling.
1. Cherry Barbs(6) and Otos
2. Cardinal Tetras(6) and Pygmy or Panda Cories(3)
3. Harlequin Rasboras(5) and Otos
4. 1 male Betta and some Panda Cories
5. 5 Female Bettas
6. A pair of Bolivian Rams
The tank is just 10 gallons, so it doesn't allow for a lot of fish. Basically, approximately 10 inches of full grown fish. Check out those options, and see what's available in your area...Have fun!

I understand completely about the budget problem...just wondering though, sometimes a 15 gall. isn't that much more expensive (here they are only approx. $10-$15 more, but I know ever cent may count), it may give you a few more options though....just a thought

I haven't seen any 15 gallons in my area but I know it would be better than 10. I thought about ordering online but I fear that the aquarium would arrive damaged and didn't want the hassle of sending it back. I think that I did see a 12 gallon at petsmart though.

One way you can save money is by purchasing your aquarium and equipment (filter, heater, pump, etc... ) used. I did this and saved quite a bit over the cost of new equipment.

Check your local classified ads and check on Craigslist.

By purchasing a used tank and equipment I was able to not only purchase the tank, but also live plants.
