Default 40 gallon cichlid tank

After I move my Angels and my cories to my 55 gal, I was wondering if I could add some more cichlids to the 40 gal.

I was thinking about a male firemouth cichlid and maybe a female convict.

Without the angels I'm afraid that the larger (5 in) severum (Sevris) would kill the smaller (4 in) severum (Sevy). Surprisingly the angels are the king and queen of the tank and usually keep the severums in line.

Any Comments would be apreciated.

Convicts can get big and aggressive. Firemouths don't get quite as big and can be somewhat aggressive. An aggressive Convict will harass a Firemouth to death.

Cole, I didn't mean to put you off on the convicts. A breeding pair of standard or pink Convicts in your 40 would be a very interesting experience. They breed easy and are very good parents. The down side is that they will eat anything they can swallow and will harass other fish so they are best kept alone. I have seen them in tanks with other equally big cichlids living in reasonable peace.

Many years ago when I had a LFS, we could not keep enough Convicts, Jack Dempseys, Oscars, and other bigger fish. We invited people to bring us their young fish (1 inch or larger). We paid reasonable cash or store credit. Things seem to have changed in the last 30 years!

I have no desire to breed convicts, my Lfs has a ton as it is.

I'm looking for a:
  • Reasonable sized cichlid (4-6in)
  • Colorful
  • Well tempered (the same attitude as a firemouth)
  • Mid difficulty to breed.

There aren't many cichlids that will stay 4 to 6 inches and are not aggressive. Have you thought of the other dwarf cichlids? Bolivian Rams, A. Agazzi, A, Cacatouides(Cockatoos), Curviceps, ect.......You can keep several different dwarfs in a tank that has a lot of "floor space" You put a lot of small pots or coconut shell halves with plants or rocks to divide them into territories. You will have most of the top area of the tank for dithers like tetras.
