tank for sis betta!!!

hi all,
ok so hopefully i should have this tank for my sis betta by the weekend?????
its an aqua 40 nano 27 litres will this be ok for her fish thats all that will
be in there??

ok now im going to cycle the tank for her as she is in hospital(this is surprise for her)

so could i use 2 of my platies to cycle the tank?
i could also give it head start with a squeeze from my small tank?
am i correct there?
will my little platies be ok in there going through a cycle???
dont want to lose them but dont want to get some fish for the cycle
then be left with them as no room at the inn!!

ok think i will leave it at that for now,
im sure i`ll be back with more questions have to keep dano busy

The size of the tank is fine for the Betta. You can take gravel from your already cycled tank and it will help it along. You can also use your platys, but it will stress them. Go here and read about fishless cycling. http://www.tropicalfishforum.net/showthread.php?t=611
I have used a piece of raw fish and let that break down to cycle my tanks and that works fine. PM me for details.

I'm guessing that your tank is roughly 7 gallons in size...

I realize that I will sound like a heathen, but I have several five gallon tanks and they are not cycled. I've had them for several years and never bothered to cycle them, as I change two gallons of water (one bucket) every weekend. I have no problems with levels when i check them, probably because the water is changed out and there is only one fish in each.

You could use the platy fish to cycle the tank, but you may not need to if the tank is small and you change the water weekly.

Some beneficial bacteria will build up eventually and you could say the tank was cycled.....In the event you should miss the water change having a bacteria colony to consume the ammonia build up will come in handy....
