With the growing costs of marine fish keeping, many people are switching to "nanos". There is a growing trend to advise beginners to start with the smaller tanks. The big disadvantage in small tanks is that keeping good water quality means maintenance is more demanding. A smaller water volume means that changes from good to bad happen fast. It also limits the fish load considerably. I have seen many beautiful small fish onlys and mini reef tanks. If you want to try marine fish without a big investment, by all means start small. You can move to bigger things as you grow with the hobby and use your little beginner tank as a quarantine tank.
