Question Do you use Activated Carbon!

In a previous thread the topic of activated carbon & its use came up, I mentioned that I use it all the time (the cartridge comes with inbuilt carbon) but I am debating whether to stop using it altogether.

I did stop using it for a while, a long time ago, but for some reason I went back to using it (it may be psychological but I believe my tanks are happier when I use it).

I am interested to know how many of you do/don't use it & I thought using a Poll might help me decide.

I use Dlack Diamond activated carbon in my Emperor 400 whenever the water in the 55gal gets a little hazey. I let it run about 10 days. I rarely medicate, but when I do, I run activated carbon after wards. Some of you and Sharon's last posts have gotten me rethinking carbon/charcoal.

I do it just makes me feel like the water is getting cleaner.

Thanks guys! I may consider only using it sporadically as Dano does & see how that goes. But I guess, as the saying goes "if it isn't broken - don't fix it".

No I don't use it. My water is sparkling clear. Trick is to use 2 filters instead of 1.

Absolutely & I have 2 filters on my tanks, I prefer to use act.car. but my main concern is that it removes some of the beneficial things as well.

I might try not using it on one tank & see if there is much difference between the tanks.

I'm glad you brought it up, I was thinking of not using it anymore ( since I started coming here and realized I should do p.w. changes more frequently then once a month ) but I think I'll just stick with it, I don't want to jinx myself and have more tank problems then I already do

I use it in both of my tanks. I have a Whisper filter in my 20-gallon, which I can easily change just the carbon and keep the same filter. The other power filter is the kind where the carbon is sewn in and I am trying to figure out how to change just the carbon on that one without throwing the whole thing away? I was thinking about just cutting a small hole and trying to get the carbon out that way, but it would be difficult to get any carbon back in through the small hole.

the off the back filters in both tanks have activated charcoal in the pre-made filter bags I use, and the towers on the undergravel filter in the one tank has cartriges where the air/water is expelled that have the activated charcoal in them.
